Theme of the Seminar

COMMEMORATING 1857:
AN EASTERN PERSPECTIVE

The Revolt of 1857, an epoch making event in the history of modern India, is best evaluated for its contribution to the emergence of nationalist consciousness.  As India, a country of over one billion people, is forging ahead in the 21st century to take its due place in the world, it is imperative to take a closer look at the events that shaped this great nation. The spirit of 1857 that united the people of different communities is to be recaptured to make India a nation with a difference in the commonwealth of nations. The youth of today needs to be reminded of the great sacrifices made by the martyrs of the great revolt of 1857.  The spirit of unity and fellowship that characterised the founding fathers of the nation is more than ever needed in today’s context. As India faces various kinds of threats, both from within and from without, the citizens of India could benefit much by taking a closer look at the past and by recapturing the magnificent spirit that permeated  the revolt of 1857.

This seminar is, therefore, a deliberate attempt to instill, especially in the student participants, the spirit of genuine nationalism in view of preparing them to face the future with its opportunities.

Major Sub-Themes:
1.   The Significance of the Revolt of 1857 in the History of Modern India.

2.   The Revolt of 1857 – a National Struggle or a Religious War?

3.   The Role of Bengal and Assam in the Revolt of 1857.

4.   The Revolt of 1857 and the various Peasant and Tribal uprisings in Eastern India.

Objectives of the Seminar
1.   As the nation celebrates the 150th anniversary of 1857 to recapture the spirit of the events of 1857 that eventually led to the growth of nationalism.
2.  To instill in the young under graduates critical appreciation for the motherland by re-reading the history of the rebellion from an Eastern Indian perspective.
3.   To foster in the young the values of unity of India as a nation in the midst of distinct cultural, religious and ethnic diversities.
